COPENHAGEN, GENEVA - Alanna Armitage in Geneva and Pernille Fenger in Copenhagen have been appointed to head two of the three UNFPA offices in Europe. The third office, Brussels, has been headed by Ms Sietske Steneker of the Netherlands since October 2007.
Ms Fenger, a Danish national, was appointed to head the UNFPA Nordic Office on 1 June. She joins UNFPA with wide experience from the Government and NGO sectors as well as the UN.
Ms Fenger has previously worked with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen, International Institute for Sustainable Development in Geneva, the Danish Embassy in Bangkok and International Labour Office in Geneva. In her most recent appointment in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms Fenger was Head of Section in charge or UN affairs and global development issues and the focal point for sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Ms Fenger holds a Master’s degree in History from the University of Copenhagen.
Ms Armitage, a Canadian citizen, joined the Geneva office a month later, on 1 July. She brings with her extensive UNFPA experience, having joined the organization nearly 20 years ago.
During her tenure with UNFPA she has had extensive contact with government policy makers and non-governmental organizations around the world. She has served UNFPA in Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and most recently in Latin America where she was UNFPA Representative for Honduras and El Salvador, and subsequently UNFPA Representative for Brazil, and Country Director for Argentina and Paraguay
Ms Armitage has a Master’s Degree in International Development from the University of Ottawa and is currently pursuing an MSc in Health Systems Management at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
