Non-Govermental Organizations

UNFPA has a long history of partnership with non-governmental organizations for the implementation of its programmes in the field. The Fund has also long acknowledged the power of non-governmental organizations to influence public opinion and policy-making in support of its mandate. The Fund was an early advocate for the inclusion of NGO delegations at major international conferences, such as the ICPD. NGOs often derive their strength from grass-roots dedication, and through alliances with them the Fund has been able to broaden its base of support in many directions.

Close working relationships with these groups, who reflect the concerns and commitments of diverse core constituencies, have helped shape public discourse, mobilize political will, generate media attention and raise funds to advance the ICPD agenda and progress toward the MDGs. The European Liaison Offices stay in close communication with national organizations, as well as with regional networks, such as the European NGOs for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Population and Development (EuroNGOs).
